Tuberculosis & Lung Infections

Tuberculosis, more commonly called TB, is an infectious disease caused by strains of mycobacteria. Although TB can attack any part of the body, most of the times it is found in the lungs. It is one of the most dangerous forms of Lung Infections. When the TB infection affects the lungs, it is known as Pulmonary TB and the cases, where the infection occurs outside the lungs, are diagnosed as Extrapulmonary TB. An interesting thing about TB is that it can lie dormant for years before becoming active and prompting any kind of symptoms. Tuberculosis Treatment will depend on whether it is a Latent TB infection or an Active TB Infection.

Latent TB Infection

TB infection has the ability to lie dormant for long periods. A latent TB Infection does not show any symptoms and can be detected only with extensive Lung Tests. The antibiotic, isoniazid (INH) is usually used for Latent Tuberculosis Treatment. Regular evaluation, of the affects of the drug, is then done to ensure that there are no major side effects. There also maybe a prescription of vitamin B6 (pyridoxine) to prevent the risks of side-effects, which is high especially in the elderly.

Active TB

Active TB is the stage when the patient is actively showing the symptoms of the disease and is also capable of communicating it to others. Active TB can take life threatening forms and should be treated as soon as possible. A combination of antibiotics like isoniazid, rifampin, pyrazinamide, or ethambutol is usually prescribed to stop the infection from emerging and multiplying.

Multidrug-Resistant TB

This is the most dangerous form of TB. Multidrug-Resistant TB infection occurs when the infecting bacteria develops resistance to multiple antibiotics. This happens with mutation of certain strains of the bacteria.
